Program Information

The Teaching Academy is a community of practice composed of passionate clinical educators across Nuvance Health. Scholars include physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, physical, occupational and respiratory therapists, speech pathologists, pharmacists and other clinical educators. The goal of the Teaching Academy is to support the teaching, leadership and educational activities of medical education by providing both resources and a forum for discussion and growth for our scholars. Each of the events that are created by the Teaching Academy are rooted in the 6 pillars of educational scholarship (6 pillars). Our scholars participate in lectures to learn about various components of medical education, and workshops to develop their own scholarly projects. The Academy has grown to three tracks each that form their own community of practice and contribute to the greater community of practice.

We invite you to review projects completed by scholars in previous cohorts.

Can anyone participate?

The Teaching Academy is a community of passionate clinical educators across Nuvance Health. We welcome applications from physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, physical, occupational, respiratory and speech therapists, pharmacists, and other clinical educators. Enrolled scholars gain exposure, knowledge, and skills to advance their careers in teaching and educational scholarship.

What is the estimated time commitment?

Participants can expect to spend 3-4 hours per month in group learning sessions and an additional 4-5 hours per month, September through June, preparing for sessions and working on their educational projects. The inaugural cohort met almost entirely via virtual platform due to COVID-19, but our hope is that conditions will allow for the 2022-2023 cohort to meet in a hybrid design of alternating monthly in-person and virtual meetings. CE credit will be awarded for time spent in group sessions.

How can I apply?

Applications for the 2023-2024 cohort will open in late spring 2023 – please check back for more information about exact dates and instructions to apply. You may also email teachingacademy@nuvancehealth.org with any questions or to share your interest in participating in Teaching Academy activities.

The Patricia A. Tietjen, MD Teaching Academy is an active member of The Academies Collaborative

The Patricia A. Tietjen, MD Teaching Academy is an active member of the Academies Collaborative (AC). The Academies Collaborative was created in 2001 with the goals of sharing nationally new approaches to improving medical education and helping to create culture change in academic medicine that better fosters the recognition, support, and collaborative work of educators. Since its founding, the Academies Collaborative has since grown to include dozens of universities with existing academies or plans to establish an academy.

The AC meets each fall in conjunction with the annual AAMC meeting to catch up on accomplishments and challenges and to tackle shared issues. The event typically features a keynote address, peer-reviewed podium presentations, and table discussions. By sharing experiences and discussing common issues, the institutions in the collaborative have learned much and strengthened the organizational change accompanying the creation of our respective academies.
