PROJECT ABSTRACT

“You Only Have An Hour!” Making Your Presentation Valuable, Meaningful and Remembered By Your Audience An On Demand Educational Toolkit for Clinical Presenters

The purpose of the program is design of an on-demand educational toolkit for clinical presenters who aim to inspire and excite their learners and provide tools for these educators to measure the effectiveness of their single, “one-chance” presentation. A commitment to health care is a commitment to educate patients and other members of the clinical team. Many clinicians, in all specialties and disciplines, are called upon to present their knowledge and expertise in a condensed “one hour” format. This can be as formal as a “grand rounds” or “nursing forum” or as relaxed as a “lunch and learn”. These settings often bring together a diverse audience of seasoned colleagues to new practitioners.Clinical presenters are given a unique opportunity to influence their learners… and often, only in this single hour. After tireless research into the topic and careful consideration of all the clinical challenges and controversies, with prepared best practice recommendations, the educator is poised to deliver that knowledge. However, there are no tools, similar to the project under design, to provide guidance and tips for clinician educators to optimally impact their learners. Available at the Tietjen Academy Website and the Nuvance Health network library platform, the presenter will be able to access concise introductory 5 minute video clips narrated by experienced Nuvance Health Educators. At each topic will also be directed references focused on key educational and presentation strategies to make their “hour” memorable…and perhaps… transformational. The initial platform will have 6 diverse instructional topics:

  • “Knowing” the Audience
  • Mitigating Bias and Assuring Inclusion
  • Active Learning in a Passive Environment
  • Defining Educational Goals
  • Developing the Take-Home Message
  • Measuring the Impact

There is no doubt that the availability of this tool will benefit educators, students and ultimately, the patients and communities they serve. The toolkit itself will be tracked through both qualitative and quantitative data and measuring utilization of the components. The initial platform will be piloted by the Norwalk Surgical PA resident group who are asked to present during their training year. The goal is for 75% of participants to report positive support to the design and delivery of their presentation.Their evaluation and that of other users will lead to the expansion and enhancement for future educators.
