From teacher to educator: The roles and identities of the medical educator

Following Dr. Osheroff’s session, attendees should be able to:

1. Describe the roles of the modern medical educator.

2. Discuss the concept of professional identity formation.

3. Compare and contrast factors that influence the formation of professional identity.

The Teaching Academy was very excited to kick off the first fall Lunch & Learn! session on Wednesday, September 28th, from 12-1pm with an invited guest speaker, Dr. Neil Osheroff. Dr. Osheroff is a Professor of Biochemistry and Medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and John G. Coniglio Chair in Biochemistry. Dr. Osheroff sits on numerous professional boards, committees, and associations within the world of medical education. Dr. Osheroff is a Past-President of the Association of Biochemistry Educators and the immediate Past-President of the International Association of Medical Science Educators, an organization with ~2,300 members in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Dr. Osheroff has received awards for mentoring, teaching, promoting diversity and inclusion, curricular design, and educational leadership and service. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Medical Education in Europe. He also has received the International Association of Medical Science Educators Distinguished Career Award for Excellence in Teaching and Educational Scholarship. Dr. Osheroff has published over 270 articles and has presented more than 400 scientific and educational talks in 37 countries.
