Visual Thinking Workshop – Feb 11, 2025

The Teaching Academy was thrilled to host Alexa Miller, visual artist, health humanities educator, and pioneer in integrating Visual Thinking Strategies into medical training, for our first ever VTS Workshop! Miller has spent over 20 years helping clinicians sharpen their observation, communication, and diagnostic skills through the arts—championing the art of doctoring as essential to the future of medicine. In this engaging two-hour Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) workshop held in-situ at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, CT, members of our clinician educator community of practice explored the power of facilitated discussion to enhance observation, critical thinking, and reflective dialogue. Using carefully selected works of art currently on display at the Aldrich, participants participated in and practiced guiding open-ended conversations, deepening their ability to foster inclusive, learner-centered discussions in medical education. The session provided a hands-on experience with VTS techniques, reinforcing the value of active listening and multiple perspectives in clinical teaching.
